About

Why a sunflower?

The humble sunflower is a hardy and resilient plant, able to thrive in a multitude of conditions. In addition to their sunny demeanor, they naturally remove pollutants from the soil they are in via a process called phytoextraction. They literally make the world around them better just by existing! They have become symbolic of chronic illness, invisible disability, neurodiversity, and mental health awareness. Can you imagine a better symbol for a mental health clinic?!

Samantha Pruitt

PMHNP-BC. FNP-BC

Samantha Pruitt, PMHNP-BC, FNP-BC is a dual board certified psychiatric mental health and family nurse practitioner who believes in the power of empathy, respect, and an integrative approach to mental health. After having her own medical concerns dismissed time after time, she practices with a deep commitment to actually listening to her patients (such a radical concept!) and working together to meet patient goals for treatment.

Sam has honed her expertise in addressing a wide range of mental health challenges but specializes in working with those with autism, ADHD, PTSD, and substance abuse disorders. Personal experience with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and several of its annoying comorbidity buddies has made her well-versed in the challenges of navigating chronic illness and the effects they can have on one's mental health.

Her integrative approach encompasses a wide range of interventions including (but not limited to) psychotherapy, medication, evidence-based supplementation, mindfulness, nutrition, and lifestyle adjustments. Her approach is rooted in the understanding that mental health is incredibly complex and both influences, and is influenced by, physical health. Medication, while often life-saving, isn't a grenade you can toss at poor mental health before you cross your fingers and take off running. It's simply one tool in a well-rounded approach. By embracing a holistic perspective, she explores the interconnections between mental, physical, and emotional health to offer a path to true healing.

Sam is Suboxone-certified ("X Waiver") and utilizes an integrative, eclectic psychotherapy approach that encompasses various therapy modalities. She is especially fond of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and loves teaching its skills to her patients.

As someone who has always had a strong desire to help people and a strong love of science, going into healthcare felt like a natural fit for me. I became a nurse practitioner and eagerly started working only to discover that job after job expected me to perform assembly line medicine: Get the patient in, diagnose them, prescribe medication, and then get them out in 15 minutes (ideally fewer) so I could move on to the next. Lather, rinse, repeat all day long. If I gave patients the time and attention I knew they needed, I was chastised for my "time management." I knew I wanted better for myself and my patients, and so Sunflower Psychiatry and Wellness was born.
